Chowrunt - I checked it out from the @Rex link - fish tail and chicken legs but what are those feet? Popsicle toes? Butter pats? And the eyes - they look like bagels. I'm afraid words are better for me than pictures.
Okay, here's the thing. M&A recently built this 15x15 puz that's kinda unhinged. (Not Prez Trump-level unhinged, but still pretty out there.) Might have U nice test solvers have a look at it over the weekend, and see what U think. It ain't NYTPuz material, becuz it's too … unhinged. Sorta like a Desperate Word Square, but on steroids. Only one double-?? clue, in the whole shootin match, tho.
Anyhoo, don't currently have any regular runtz left in the pen, cuz this 15x15 dealy took all m&y strength & nanoseconds to build. Soo … hope y'all find it … interestin. And thanx, for continuin to humor us unhinged types.
Wow! What a gorgeous work of art! I really hope you can get this before a wider audience, and I don't mean the Rex gang! Anybody got Jeff Chen's address?
Thanx, @BobK. and @Teedmn. Just thrilled, that U liked the general concept. Was the revealer essential? Might be easier to build one of these, without it. I already had posted this puppy at @RexWorld. But, that's ok. The bottom of this unhinged attempt got a wee bit desperate, for "prime time". Will give it a go again with a different 1-Across entry (and maybe sans-any revealer?) sometime, after M&A gets his nerve back.
1. @Teedmn: Thanx. Decided not to submit, due to puzzle 56-A revealer's cocky [tho meant as tongue-in-cheek] attitude. Rex P. woulda burst a blood vessel, if it had made it to the NYT. [PuzEatinSpouse did laugh out loud, when she read 56-A, tho.] M&A has recently got off his can and submitted 3 other NYTPuz candidates, howsomeever.
2. @r.alph: yep. Yer added interpretation on 56-A is spot on.
3. No test solver had a clean solve, but each solve was off by only just one stinkin letter. And I thought the solvetimes were superb, btw.
4. Only 4 themers, so this grid was pretty easy to fill. Even had a chance to slip in some good longer ones, of which 24-D and 62-A were faves, as they are both rigorous spellin tests.
5. Interestin, that 1-D and 49-D set such unintended but dastardly traps. Was tryin to be tricky with their clues, but the alternative answers hadn't occurred to m&e.
6. Forgot to put a double-?? clue in there, as had been considerin a possible submission, briefly.
Thanx for takin all that time to solve this non-runt beast -- and so soon after endurin that "Hysteria" giant. Now the future lil runtpuzs will no doubt look mighty cute and cuddly and friendly, to all U nice folks.
Hmmm… test solvers were all a letter or two off on their "Runt Rolls" solves, also. Ever sooo brutally close, but no cinnamon roll. Musta made that puppy too much of an attack dog...
Also … slight correction: test solver @BG1 still has a chance for a clean solve on the "Search Party" beast. Good luck, @BG1!
And over on last night's @Rex, they are suggesting LSD will help understand M&A - har. The sINBAD clue must have been too much for somebody. I thought it was great.

@M&A That was #899. If you refresh the browser after you click the M & A Runt Puzzles link you should see them all. FYI, BEQ will be publishing #935 tomorrow.
@BobK You mentioned that your solution showed up twice for a recent puzzle. It is probably because the upload was slow and you clicked the upload link again. I will fix this in the next release of the program.
"Runt Tax"-- Wow, @BobK's solve and mine were so alike that I had to run the replay letter by letter to figure out how they differed (though I was slower - nice one, @BobK!)
*** slight spoiler alert re: "Signs on the Dotted Line" ***
@r.alph: Major unchecked letter O flaw? All M&A can say, in his runt's defense is: (O)OF! [Oh … and the usual "No Refunds", of course.] Looks like from early testsolves that this runt had some tenacious jaws on him, tho. Or, it failed to YIELD, or somesuch.
@BobK.--Yer solvetime woulda definitely smashed all fourth grade records. Good job. Thanx, for bein such a faithful, earlybird test solver of the runtz. M&A always knows right away, if there's a possible "major flaw" in each 7x7 dog, due to yer diligence.
And thanx to @r.major-O-flaw.alph, for keepin this site up and barkin. I owe him a handwritten letter of thanx, sometime soon. Interestin stats from him, on the race to 1000 puzs, btw. Tho it still seems like a kinda apples-to-oranges (or pedigree-to-mutt) comparison, it's fun to have it all splatzed out there on the dogdish, to contemplate.
@M&A _ Thanks for the quick response! Actually, I got the overall point by the end, but I still think that if Rex, e.g., were reviewing this runt, he would still find that 8A kinda stretches thing a bit too far (everything in your explanation starting from the word "plus" seems out of line with the rest of the theme.) As always, I am smiling.
@BobK.- No sweat, on the quick response. M&A was kinda concerned, about this puppy. Don't even wanna go there, about what Rex woulda said about it. 8A woulda been my double-?? *fart??*, if I'da gone thataway.
Yes, Diana from Syndiland and I will be at the CRU. I look forward to renewing my acquaintance with you and Dave Eckhart, and to meeting everybody else!
Good luck to all, at the ACPT. Especially to those (unlike M&A) who are attendin it. Hope all the recent runtz have provided at least a runty amount of practice prep.
@M&A @Tita A from the Rex Parker blog emailed me an idea:
I have been working with Noteworthy Chocolates, a very creative new business near me. A really fun couple who had the brilliant idea to laser engrave messages on chocolate. Very high quality chocolate.
I thought that it would be fun to engrave a puzzle... I chose Will's favorite puzzle...the election day CLINTON/BOBDOLE Schroedinger. I had them make it up, and I gave it to Will at his ping pong place, saying this would be awesome as prizes for acpt. He loved the idea!
Anyhow, I am at the show with a bunch of small samples. I had wanted to contact you about having M&A do a runtpuz specific to the event. Because the founder lagged a bit on that, he went ahead and just picked a random puzzle.
look at the pics...these are small, business card sized. Do you think M&A could create a 6x6 or 5x5, with low enough word count so it would fit?
I assued her that if anyone could do it you could. Perhaps you could work with the company to sell them.
Lol - 3D indeed!! Thanks Teedmn for clueing me in to @r.alph's and @m&a's responses. Thank you M&A - that was fun. And tasty.
I'll be sure to pass this on to the choco-family who had this awesome idea. BTW - founder came to ACPT with his 8 year old daughter - I gave he a "puzzles for kids" puzzle, gave her some hints, and she may be hooked!!
Have to publish again so I can click the "Notify" button. So, I'll take this opportunity to say hey to y'all in runtland, and in particular, to Teedmn. It was awesome to meet you! I hope that you'll come back east again. Lollapuzoolah?
Is @bodget2 = @bodgit1, human-unit-wise? Confuses the M&A.
If it's the same person, M&A has a another (single-round) runtpuz challenge for that person …
Challenge: Make (and publish here, of course) a themed runtpuz with one of the following three sorta topical titles: 1. "House Intelligence Committee". 2. "Spot the Leaks". 3. "Spicer!"
Thanx. If @bodg?t# picks one, M&A'll pick a leftover one.

Actually, I got the overall point by the end, but I still think that if Rex, e.g., were reviewing this runt, he would still find that 8A kinda stretches thing a bit too far (everything in your explanation starting from the word "plus" seems out of line with the rest of the theme.) ReplyDelete@Tita A from the Rex Parker blog emailed me an idea:
Here is a picture of a piece of chocolate engraved with a crossword puzzle:
