Biter runt alert. Inspired (very loosely) by a recent NYTPuz. But I thought it was a pretty good one, so don't hold that against m&e. 15 min. solve time limit…
Them themed runtz is always a passle harder than unthemed. If U have 3 or 4 slightly-cryptic themers in a runtpuz, that's a big % of yer 20 orso answers that get immediately clouded up.
p.s. M&A is also hittin a roadtrip soon, which will probably involve a 1-week M&A runtpuz truce, give or take. Truce will probably kick in around this Thursday. Thanx.
Here's the other thing: This runtpuz is so raised-by-wolves vicious, that the winning solvetime shall be the *highest* one -- without going over the 24 min. limit …
Stumpy Stumper: "Et Too Brutal" - 7x7 themeless biter:
Well, dang, @BobK. Not sure you'll win the "Et Too Brutal" competition, with a solve time that good. A squeaky clean (and ideally 23+ min.) solve would be a real contender.
To make a very long story very short, because I travel with carry-on luggage only, I don't even know if I will be able to take the iPad on my next trip! (TSA and all that.)
@r.alph: Latest M&A (admittedly half-baked) audit of the 1000-puz count situation…
* By my count, BEQ has published 958 puzs so far at his website. This evidently does not count any of his "guest" puzs, as they did not get numbers.
* By my count, M&A has published 968 puzs up til now at this Runtpuz website. This count I think excludes most of the extra-neat "guest" puzs, currently included on the runtpuz.org list. (This is tricky-ish to verify, tho; I spotted at least one runt that wasn't actually credited to @BG1, f'rinstance.)
I found 28 runts by other authors (one was a collaboration with LMS) I have updated runtpuz.org to include the 996 puzzles that I have. It's up to you when the fire works go off, either at 1000 or 1028. I will offer a copy of the graphic novel "Fun" that Rex Parker mentioned recently to a randomly selected winner. People can enter the contest by posting their names in a comment followed by !!. I will post the winner at Rex Parker and they can email me where they want the book sent. In the spirit of anonymity that permeates this site they don't have to use their real names but the winner needs to give me a real address.

p.s. @r.alph: I have a "special" 1000th runtpuz that I made a while back, which I will publish somewheres around the team runt 1000-mark -- comin real soon. (It is just a runt, so that's why "special" needs to be regarded with the appropriate moderation.)
Sorry to fail at #999, but re "Unchecked Universe", whether the problem is on your end (unlikely) or my end (dying iMac which I have sworn to replace), I can't get any response to my clicks.
@BobK. -- Hey, cool! Constipated runtpuz! (I had the same problem).
I was able to jar it loose, by doing an "enter rebus square" to type in a square #1 value (M&A's fave letter). After that went in, I was able to use the arrow keys to start moving around the grid.
"Unchecked Universe" crashes the program because 1 Across is unchecked. I am on the road now and will fix this in a couple of days. I am not sure how this worked on M&A's machine
@BobK.--Day-um, dude. 999 is just not yer lucky number. First a fit of puz constipation, followed up by a rabbit that goes straight for yer jugular. Bummer.
"Unchecked Universe" It didn't work for me this morning when I signed in. I ascribed it to problems I've been having with my Mozilla. But now it worked for me including the unchecked squares. Logjam unjammed?
@Teedmn: I believe U are correct. "Unchecked Universe" seems to be workin just fine, now. It shall now be unofficially known as "Unchecked ExLax Universe".
@BobK--Thanx, back. The runtz always enjoy bein thought of, as the best possible messes.
M&A
p.s. @Teedmn-- Speakin of messes … Hope U were eventually able to figure out the "Week Connections" tema. If not, see the mighty @r.alph's solvecomments on it.
@BobK-- har. How on earth do U find this stuff? TERUKKUTTU is a tad loong for std. runtgrids, but sure do like it. Also … Terukkuttustan has a primo ring to it.
@M&A, yes, I read @r.alph's comment and got a face palm for my troubles. I had a similar aha moment last week for my bewilderment re: 2D on "Unchecked Universe". Sometimes it takes a while...
@BobK-- Great to hear from U. U are one dedicated runtsolver. For completeness sake: Did U ever get to solve "Undercover Gals", about 4 runtpuzs back? M&A
"Runt Country" - about three minutes, pen on paper, no erasures. Quite a bit of nice trivia there. I wasn't absolutely sure which category each entry fell in, which slowed me down a bit. (Reminds me of the question, once posed by Will Shortz, "What is the only nationality which is a palindrome?")
P.S. to Teedmn - Yes, the cactus is still thriving, and has grown 5 or 6 inches in the last year, now almost even with the top of the second story window.
P.S. to M&A - Those bloodhounds over at Runt Central sure are thorough! The truth is, just a week or so before I left on vacation, I was hit with some lower back pain, which the doctors have not brought completely to heel yet. When I sat down to do "Undercover Gals" I was distracted with pain and a general grumpiness and frustration, and when I didn't get the gimmick, I just quit and didn't post any comment. Sorry, it won't happen again (I hope.)
@M&A I think you will like the Dec 22, 1999 NYT puzzle by Richard Silvestri. I assume that you subscribe to the online NYT puzzle and you can get it from the Archive. If not I will upload it to my server.
Also passed Parowan, Utah on a recent roadtrip and saw a sign announcing that it was the home of the best cinnamon rolls in the West. See https://parowan.org/best-cinnamon-rolls-in-the-west/
It might be worth investigating if you pass near Parowan on one of your road trips.
@r.alph: PuzEatinSpouse really wants to tour Utah, as it is one of only two states she hasn't been to yet. Now, M&A wants to go to there, too. Will check out the 1999 NYTPuz, also. Thanx.
German keyboard? har … vee have vays to make U type! Do Germans have a "Q" or "X" key? I suppose they need em all, in case they want to access all the vebsites out there … ?
"Et Too Brutal III" I'm playing catch-up now that I'm back in WiFi land, after a weekend in northern WI, where you're more likely to get woodticks than cellular coverage. Thanks, and a happy 4th to all, a bit late.
Some downright decent solve times on "Runny Vowels", considerin M&A was pretty nervous that he was releasin a possible biter runt on nice, unsuspectin test solvers. Especially impressive, for those usin alien mall keyboards.
Sure liked how "Runny" sounded a lot like "Runty", in any case.
Apologies, but am splatzin this next runt out in public pretty early in the day, due to a host of later gala plans at the M&A household. This runt could be a breeze. Or it could be a day-um runtmare. No idea. Thanx for not askin for the refund ...
Another runt mess-terpiece … unleashed not quite as early in the day, this time. But it's been a good 24 hours since the last barking gridball, sooo … what the hey.

DeleteI was able to jar it loose, by doing an "enter rebus square" to type in a square #1 value (M&A's fave letter). After that went in, I was able to use the arrow keys to start moving around the grid.

ReplyDeleteP.S. to Teedmn - Yes, the cactus is still thriving, and has grown 5 or 6 inches in the last year, now almost even with the top of the second story window.
P.S. to M&A - Those bloodhounds over at Runt Central sure are thorough!
@BobK -- Well, yeah … of course I know some runtpuzs can be a pain in the butt to solve.
