    Hi there!
I thought it had been a long time between runts.

Have I ever mentioned that I almost never go directly to the Runtpuz site? I just have the "Notify me" box checked all the time and automatically get the next puzzle when it is posted -- unless a new thread is started, and I go on ignorant of its existence.

    hanks.

Not that I actually got anywhere with it --

    http://puzzlecrowd.com:8080/CrowdSource/GetSolution?id=MjA0NjI1MzU5MzY3NTY0

And since I try to take a new thread in the order in which it was posted, to avoid any possible spoilers, I only just now noticed M&A's concern about my internet status. No, I am fine right now, and only seemed to disappear for the reason given in my previous post. But they say the storm coming tomorrow (3/7) will be much more severe. (Truth is, I got no snow at all out of the previous storm, although people 25 miles away had half a foot.)

    Thanks.

  13. @BobK. - yep. Gotta admit, part of what's fun to the M&A is tryin out new [dare we say weird] puz stuff. Had some colossal runt belly-up flops, but hopefully some pups that U folks might consider successes.
    Some that sorta worked out:

    * Double-?? clues. Can. not. believe. other mainline crosswords don't use these. Usually only do one per runtpuz … gotta keep it fair.

    * Desperate Word Squares. All @BobK.'s fault, as he originally urged M&A to do one of them 7x7, no black squares, grids. But now I think we've done 40+something of the lil suckers. And they are easier to make than people think … the NYTPuz really oughta try doin one.

    * Illustrated Runtpuzs. This is mostly @r.alph's fault, as he enabled the use of pictures in the amazin Down Home puz app. Not many mainline puzs can do this. M&A's fave illustrated runt: the one where U have to identify different animal poops. I still laugh out loud, when ever I google "runtpuz pics" and see a lot of the past runt illustrations, includin a pile of poop.

    * Galaxy of the Guardian runts. These was an ode to the Brit's cryptic crosswords, except I think M&A annoyed purist solvers by bendin the cryptic puz rules. Every clue was a double-?? clue. Instead of always stickin the non-cryptic clue part at the start or end, M&A liked puttin some of em in the middle of the cryptic clue. Still … it might be time to trot out another of these pups and let it bark at folks …

    * Stumpy Stumpers. These are actually just themeless runtpuzs. But they look treacherous, cuz they now always get a title. Title comes from random words pulled from the puz's clues. Usually, these are the easiest [rest period] runtz.

    * Runt-rolls. Primo technique for squeezin more long-ish words into runty 7x7 grids. Variation: Gluin 2-letter answers together, to get longer words.

    * Scoreboards for atomic symbols, ISO-country codes [@BobK.'s idea!], and postal codes. Very helpful to the M&A, due to all them 2-letter words that keep poppin up in the runtgrids.

    * All-German runtpuzs. Just kiddin -- this one-time experiment really blew up in solvers' faces. Originally wrote it just for a German friend of mine, but decided what the heck might as well put it out there. Wrong again, Mask Breath.

Anyhoo … Thanx for puttin up with it all,
    M&A

  14. Wow! Great summary, M&A. I would even suggest that, if possible, all of the above be preserved in the (not yet existing) Runtpuz FAQs. [ Not just because I am credited twice, honest. No, really.] Of course, that means more work for the long-suffering r.alph, but maybe he could be persuaded.

Thank you again for all the brilliant runts!

Great idea. The current post now has a FAQs link (http://puzzlecrowd.com/runtfaqs.html) to the right of the Avant Grid Crosswords header. It is a first draft. Questions posted here that M&A deigns to answer will be added to the FAQs. Also, M&A, please feel free to edit anything that is there now.

Here is a question: Why 7x7?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If a runt puzzle were bigger than 7x7, it wouldn't be truly runty.
If it was smaller than 7x7, it would be too limitin in its weird ball theme possibilities.
Also, "7" sounded like a real lucky number.

Is it maybe time for us to do a Spring Runtpuz Splatzout? We haven't enjoyed one of those things in ages, it seems.

If "yes", I propose we each present the other with a list of five proposed runtpuz titles for the other to choose one from, to base his Splatzout entry upon. And, of course, then build a runtpuz with that title.

Here's my list, below. If all this works for U, send me your list and go ahead and pick what would be a good "due date" for our Splatzout entries to be published.

    Thanx,

    Proposed Runtpuz Titles:
    1. "Wrong Number".
    2. "Wise Quacks".
    3. "How 2 Get Ahead".
    4. "Rock Study".
    5. "Dining Out".

If anybody else wants in on this contest, and yer name ain't Patrick Berry, let m&e know. I'll send U out another separate list of five titles.

  101. I have been focussing on square dancing for the last month at the expense of my xword habit. To get back I have declared runtpuz bankruptcy leaving the last 20 or 30 puzzles unsolved. But they are in the database.

I have updated the runt corpus. It went from
12,187 words to 13,456 words and 483 to 494 two letter words. Only 676-494 = 182 left to go.

"Weird City" was a great puzzle. I am glad that jumped back in the pool in time to solve it.
