Re: my suggestion of an alternate clue. I only knew the novel in question by the title, and on a good day could name the author, but didn't know the story. Ten minutes with the summary on Wikipedia was quite informative, and quite grim!
@r.alph: No biggie, but -- I noticed that when runnin the Down Home version of a runtpuz, the clue number repeats itself, in the large clue display, near the top. Example: 1. 1. Looong sandwich
@r.alph - Blame me, the #1 weasel here. I'm pretty sure the first time I uploaded the solution, it showed a check time of six or seven minutes. But I was wondering why when solving I had missed seeing the illustration. Actually, I think it may have to do with my learned habit of ignoring ads and other stuff on websites. But in any case, I had done the runt on my iMac but when I went back for a second look it was on my iPad. Somehow that seemed to start the clock running again. Interesting. I will see if I can reproduce having the clock start up again on a finished puzzle and fix it. The only harm done was to your ACPT score. Perhaps M&A could prefix all clues with "Picture clue:" or something like that.

@r.alph: Cute Bob K idea. Any way that M&A could preset the "recommended solve time"? I would recommend what Bob K said (20 minutes), for the "Two Bits" one.
@BobK. - This "Two Bits" puppy is yet another runt that would've been near-impossible (and certainly not near the fun) to make without @r.alph's brilliant programming work, behind the scenes.
Occurred to M&A, after the fact, that the Runtpuz book in the "Two Bits" ad shoulda been titled "The Runtpuz. Com-Pile-ation". [Adding on the dot after the Runtpuz word.]
@M&A soon I will let you specify the time when you upload the puzzle using UploadRunt. And I will add the time to the title when the puzzle is displayed.
How about adding the time at the end of the <TITLE>. I will search for some numbers followed by minutes, e.g. "My Runt. Time: 15 minutes" You can put anything you want before the numbers.
Funny you should mention that. Since I posted my comment, my exiled conscience has been pounding on the door yelling, "You should have mentioned how each time you make a request, poor r.alph gets stuck with another project!"
And of course, @bodgit1 has demonstrated that the runt could be tamed in ten minutes.
PuzEatinSpouse returns from a full week of partyin with five old friends in Ft. Lauderdale, later tonight. So … cinnamon roll blowout ensues. The M&A Runtpuz Experience may experience a slight lull, over the next few days.
Meanwhile, let's fulfill one of @r.alph's brilliant requests …
p.s Be sure to allow 20 minutes of time, for the Krautword, our first of @r.alph's requested Foreign Language Runt Series. (20 min., mainly because AcrossLite wouldn't digest umlauts properly.)
@Gator fans: Not only is this a relative of today's NYTPuz, I discovered it also has some ties to the 10 Apr 2000 NYTPuz, if U'd enjoy a walk down nostalgia lane.
@BG1. yep. Takin additional time beyond the usual 20-minute runt build window, I bet there may be some really cool iffy names out there to be cooked up.
Best topical ones that have since come to mind: XED Cruz & CARNY Fiorina.
"NC Bathroom ID Check" Great play on @Lewis' comment today. And thanks for the 4/10/2000 tip for the Gator puzz. I wonder if I found it as easy in 2000 as I did in 2016. Probably not.
Sorry for the title confusion I caused, btw. Official title shoulda been "It Totally Sucks!"
And, absolutely no offense intended toward the NYT ThursPuz. Title applies totally to this runtpuz. I kinda like @BG1's idea of puttin "IT" in the circle; wish I'da thought of that, during last night's 20-minute constructioneerin blitz. But, either way, the title does its job, givin a nice circled word hint, I reckon.
M&A
p.s. Aaaah … Tomorrow's NYTPuz will probably be a themeless. Don't have to be worried about another runttheme inspiration, right?
This puppy took looong time to build, as it was inspired by both yesterday's and today's NYTPuzs. This is getting to be a nasty habit, and M&A needs to stop lookin at the doggone NYTPuzs for a while, to reclaim a runty bit of his former sanity.
Stumpy Stumper: "Renminbi Me?" - 7x7 themeless but maybe not:
re: "Elvis Sightings" … I see that some of M&A's cryptic Elvis song title riffs were a bit hard to pick up on. Here is an emergency recap, on the song title parts:
M&A has been feelin kinda low, lately. Tryin as hard as he can, not one of his runtpuzs has ever been awarded Jeff Chen's xwordinfo coveted Puzzle Of the Week (POW!) award … so, ok … I just reckon M&A will go ahead and settle for this …
OK, I think I've been successfully weaned now from bein inspired by each NYTPuz last week. Havin the NYT SatPuz clobber me on the head probably helped. Gettin Elvis the heck out of the dog run pen didn't hurt, neither.
So … tryin again to declare that M&A runt-truce , for at least the next four-five days. I think I can do this. Takes willpower, tho. Thanx. Enjoy yer extra free time, on parole.
@all test solvers: Primo "Ad Up??" solve times! Proud of y'all.

hey. no peekin.
@Teedmn: Nice catch on BABE. Notice that the middle column, as a whole, could be clued as: {Take apart??}. Can not believe that the M&A grid-scanner brain lobe missed that, during cluing.
@BobK. - What the heck runtpuz are U talkin about?!?
Actually, I deleted the original "Pairs of Briefs" runtpuz posting, due to an interesting ironic double-boo-boo, which your test solved helped reveal: 1) Runtpuz posted title had an extra "S". 2) Runtpuz 3-Down clue had an extra "S".
Corrected version is posted, below. Nice test solve time, tho, considerin U were battlin those errors. Sorry.
Think I musta clued "Duct Tape" up a tad too harshly. Next runt will (try to) compensate solvers for all their recent sufferin, even tho all that mighta been good for em.

ReplyDeleteAnd, absolutely no offense intended toward the NYT ThursPuz. Title applies totally to this runtpuz. I kinda like @BG1's idea of puttin "IT" in the circle; wish I'da thought of that, during last night's 20-minute constructioneerin blitz.
