ACPT update The pressure's off. Made a stupid mistake on puzzle 2. Puzzles 1 and 3 were clean solves. I don't care about the time. I am after accuracy.
Thanks to all at runtpuz, especially M&A, for a year of tough training for the ACPT.
I set a personal achievement this year, finishing all seven puzzles with every letter correct. (Yeah, yeah, maybe the puzzles were easier.)
My standing (at present, subject to changes as judges respond to complaints) is 217 of the approx 524 who finished all the puzzles, or right in the middle where I am supposed to be.
For most of those who attend, the ACPT is more about socializing with others who love words and games much more than the competition and prizes. I hope that those who solved at home had fun doing it, too.
@BobK. -- Wow U are solidly into the upper half of the ACPT solvin elite! Congrats. M&A is impressed. (Delighted to help, if runtpuzs can even unofficially be called that.)
**slight "Down in the DMPS" spoiler alert, below**
If U are wonderin about this weird little puz's title: I think it has every letter in it except D,M,P & S. Not a great runt, overall, becuz of some desperately scrabbly fill. But, again congrats to BobK for getting a clean solve, even on this scruffy runt. (It's sorta like bein nipped in the heel by yer mangy pooch, after comin home from a nice vacation getaway.)
Will work on the logo, in spare time. Am a slow drawer, so patience may be required. But, hey -- what's the rush, anyhoo. OK if I mail the result to U?
If you have a cell phone with a camera you could take a picture of the drawing and copy it to your computer. If you do this I will modify the upload program you use for puzzles to accept jpegs also. Otherwise I will let you know my snail mail address.
UploadRunt will now upload files with extensions .jpeg and .jpg. It will display a URL that you can paste into a comment here. Ignore the puzzle title input field.
[Important Note: reference http://puzzlecrowd.com/kf/Runt632pics.jpg for this runt's illustrations, at any time U like, during the solve. M&A recommends using two windows, so U can switch back and forth between puz and pics.]
@r.alph: To answer the question in yer nice comments, I don't have any other "Runtz Illustrated" runtz planned, at the moment. This puppy took an awful long time (for me) to put together. Still, I might do something with artwork someday -- tho, hopefully not artwork for each clue, again.
Glad to hear folks generally liked this scruffy lil experiment. Thanx, to all the folks who dumped their artwork and photos on the Internet as Google-accessible pics, so that M&A could do this runtpuz. Especially liked the runt drinkin out of the toilet bowl -- really gave the puz some extra class.
@r.alph: It sounds like a great feature, and yep I would probably use it sometimes. U sure are nice to offer to do it. Go for it, if it's not a bear for U to implement … I just hate to have U go to too much trouble, for an anonymous weirdo dude who wears a mask and has trouble thinkin bigger than 7x7.
Thanx, @BG1. Well-spotted, on the Uncle Scrooge characters. @BobK.: I had figured that NY PizzaRat was a worldwide celeb, but then, I don't get out much. @Teedmn: yep. Go Vikes; just don't hurt yer heads.
har. After I posted "Grocery Dredger", I noticed a couple of amusing peccadilloes. Figured maybe nobody would notice. Well, first test solver pipes up "where's the desperation?", so the fact that there's no double-?? clues didn't escape detection long…
In retrospect, best candidate for a double-?? clue in "Grocery Dredger" might be its 8-Across entry. Possible improved clue: {Early morning hr., to Yoda??].
Can't believe that not any of the first 3 test solvers brought up my other glaring (but kinda cool) boo-boo, in this runtpuz. Guess it's up to @Teedmn, to nail it. (No pressure, darlin.)
M&A
p.s. previous comment deleted, on account of M&A couldn't spell worth a snot.
p.s. @r.alph: Been thinkin powerful hard about yer "clue-imbedded pic url" programmin enhancement. If U go for it, here's M&A's thought-bullets:
1. Program could remove clue-url-flag and url from Down-Home runtpuz clue, but probably needs to leave the clue alone, in the AcrossLite runtpuz clue version. Otherwise, A-L solvers wouldn't know how to view the pic. 2. Ergo, maybe the runtpuz clue-url-flag part oughta be somethin that makes sense to A-L solvers, as is. How about: "**PIC is at:", for the clue-url flag text, or somesuch? 3. Example: {This guy **PIC is at: http://puzzlecrowd.com/kf/whoever.jpg}
@M&A: sorry but I got called out of town unexpectedly and didn't have time to finish up a planned new runt. I'll keep working on it but in the meantime here's one that I constructed a while ago but never published.
yo, @r.alph: Let me know, if U ever need a runtpuz with them **PIC urls stuck into its clues. I could leave it caged up, in the parking garage, as a lab experimental animal for U to do tests on.
@r.alph -- Congratulations on having the highest score on "Better Spot check" so far! But I must point out something I didn't take the time to enter when I uploaded my comments: the answer to 1 D was an answer to a recent NYT puzzle. It takes nothing from M&A's genius to note that he frequently uses clues and answers from NYT puzzles that are still fresh in mind. (But I didn't get 1 D either!)
I'm trying to speed up the time it takes me to construct a puzzle. I set a one-day time limit on this one but it ended up taking two days. It still has a few too many crosswordese answers for my liking but I think it turned out okay.
@Teedmn: Outstandin!! And … U were 1 state away from perfection! Still, U definitely scoop up first place honors, from the test solvers. Bagged and collared!
A little placeholder, to buy @bodgit more precious nanoseconds, on makin his challenge runtpuz.

Thanks.
Thanks to all at runtpuz, especially M&A, for a year of tough training for the ACPT.
ReplyDeleteI set a personal achievement this year, finishing all seven puzzles with every letter correct.
Delete**slight "Down in the DMPS" spoiler alert, below**
If U are wonderin about this weird little puz's title: I think it has every letter in it except D,M,P & S. Not a great runt, overall, becuz of some desperately scrabbly fill. But, again congrats to BobK for getting a clean solve, even on this scruffy runt. (It's sorta like bein nipped in the heel by yer mangy pooch, after comin home from a nice vacation getaway.)

@r.alph: To answer the question in yer nice comments, I don't have any other "Runtz Illustrated" runtz planned, at the moment. This puppy took an awful long time (for me) to put together. Still, I might do something with artwork someday -- tho, hopefully not artwork for each clue, again.

ReplyDelete@r.alph: Been thinkin powerful hard about yer "clue-imbedded pic url" programmin enhancement. If U go for it, here's M&A's thought-bullets:
1. Program could remove clue-url-flag and url from Down-Home runtpuz clue, but probably needs to leave the clue alone, in the AcrossLite runtpuz clue version. Otherwise, A-L solvers wouldn't know how to view the pic.
2. Ergo, maybe the runtpuz clue-url-flag part oughta be somethin that makes sense to A-L solvers, as is. How about: "**PIC is at:", for the clue-url flag text, or somesuch?
3. Example:
{This guy **PIC is at: http://puzzlecrowd.com/kf/whoever.jpg}
M&A
Good idea. I'll do it.
