M&A is duly masked and astonished that so far two brilliant runt puzzle scholars and relentlessly good test solvers have both crashed and burnt on 13-Across. And all they had to do was understand/remember what all the rUntpUz themers had in em. But, hey -- they're still thoroughly amazin solvers, IM&AO. Still, interestin outcomes.
@r.alph: Primo suggested runtpuz alias. Another such upcomin attraction with similar possibilities is the dreaded "Notty Problem" runt … Need to enter that pup into the magic runtpuz-generatin computer device first, tho.
This is a bonus runtpuz, made especially for long-time primo runt-regular BobK. Kinda like a runty thank-U getaway outing, designed with him in mind. All the rest of U nice folks are welcome to solve it, too -- but I bet BobK. might well nail the best solvetime.

@Kirk -- Thank you for your kind words, but allow me to point out that for most runts, my score is well below that of @Teedmn, @r.alph, or @Kitchef. I only get a higher number for time required to solve! (When I attend the ACPT or Lollapuzzoola, I almost always finish right in the middle of the pack, which is fine with me.)
Some background: I have been fortunate in recent years to vacation on Mallorca. When I mentioned this on the blog, M&A, with his keen eyes for language, quickly broke that name into crossword-friendly MALL and crossword-superstar ORCA. (I stay at the home of a friend, so there are no hotel bills, no car rental, and mostly dining in on grocery-bought food. All very affordable. IBIZA is where the rich people go; I have never been there.)
When I first went to Mallorca, I didn't have access to a keyboard, so when I wanted to keep up with runt puzzles, I would draw the grid on paper and fill it out. M&A kindly invented the "Desperate Word Square," a 7 x 7 grid with no black squares, to simplify my effort. It is the kind of puzzle I have always loved, and it continues to thrive.
Thanks for the lengthy explanation, Bob. These runts are rather addictive, tough to keep away from them for any length of time. I notice that you are usually the first one to solve them.
It could be a while before any of us does any travelling overseas.
After reading @Kirk's comment, I realized I managed to make a boo-boo from what I'd intended, in 5-Down of "Desperate Word Square #78". That was real weird … the answer I had intended for 5-D is missing a letter!
5-Down needs a more imaginative [raised-by-wolves] clue, to make its answer work at all right. Revised version is attached below:

@Kirk -- Thank you for your kind words, but allow me to point out that for most runts, my score is well below that of @Teedmn, @r.alph, or @Kitchef. I only get a higher number for time required to solve! (When I attend the ACPT or Lollapuzzoola, I almost always finish right in the middle of the pack, which is fine with me.)
ReplyDeleteSome background: I have been fortunate in recent years to vacation on Mallorca. When I mentioned this on the blog, M&A, with his keen eyes for language, quickly broke that name into crossword-friendly MALL and crossword-superstar ORCA. (I stay at the home of a friend, so there are no hotel bills, no car rental, and mostly dining in on grocery-bought food. All very affordable. IBIZA is where the rich people go; I have never been there.)
When I first went to Mallorca, I didn't have access to a keyboard, so when I wanted to keep up with runt puzzles, I would draw the grid on paper and fill it out. M&A kindly invented the "Desperate Word Square," a 7 x 7 grid with no black squares, to simplify my effort. It is the kind of puzzle I have always loved, and it continues to thrive.
