  2. I came up with the idea for the puzzle this morning. It came together pretty easily. The top row was added after the rest of the puzzle was done so it isn't really a runt anymore.

    Hit the Show Solvers button to see @BobK's and @bodgit1's results interleaved with mine.

    @bodgit1
    If you want to be referred to as bodgit1 in the interleaved comments, you can do the following.

    1. Next time you start a puzzle locate the options link at the top of the window, click it, and replace "anonymous" with "bodgit1" and click okay. You only have to do this once.

  10. For now on, my puzzle reports for the NYT puzzle will show all the clues ending in "?". These are usually the most interesting ones.

    These clues today are
    {Classic out-of-office sign ... or what this puzzle's author has done?}
    {Bull session?}
    {Address of Juliet's balcony?}

    These puzzle reports are a useful resource for posting on Rex Parker, e.g., M&A sometimes indicates that a word has Patrick Berry immunity.

    Also today's puzzle has 15 answers that have never appeared in the Shortzian era which seems like a lot for a Tuesday puzzle.

    If you ever have to hit Resume then a pause happened. This could happen if you went to another window in the browser or tabbed to another program and then returned to the puzzle.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @r.alph - I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. I had just started the puzzle when the phone rang (put in one or two answers). So I hit "pause" and turned my attention from the puzzle for 4 minutes and 40 seconds, according to my phone. Then I went back to the puzzle, hit "resume" and finished. Never left the page, went to another browser, or did anything on the computer. As always, I'm not complaining, just doing my part as a test solver!

    1. Hitting the pause button will stop the puzzle clock (the one that is running while you solve the puzzle). The adjusted time should be whatever time is shown on the puzzle clock when the solution is determined to be corrected. I am not sure why your adjusted time is only 2 minutes from the actual time:

      Time when puzzle correct: 8 min 29 sec
      Time when puzzle handed in: 8 min 32 sec
      Adjusted time for handing in: 6 min 34 sec

      If you know three languages you're trilingual

      If you know one language you're ...

    p.s.
    @r.alph: The **gruntz** hotlink on my Rex Parker comment today doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe I did somethin wrong, or maybe it got disabled?

    This is surely not what you posted. Could you copy and paste what you pasted into Rex Parker here?

    1. @r.alph: Doesn;t seem to work here, either. Therefore, probably something I did wrong?

    2. @r.alph: Kinda odd, cuz the hotlink worked just fine, when I posted it at 8:20pm on 6Feb. Only thing I changed in the html-stuff was "**gruntz** to **click here**.
      I then saved the original html into a text file, for use the next day; but it somehow rotted overnight to where it no longer worked? Just eyeballing the saved html, it appears to be ok (to the semi-trained eye of M&A).

      Also, the new hotlink added tonight for Stumpy Stumper seemed to work ok. I will now attempt a test of using the text-file-saved version of its html, below…

    My guess is that there is something about the form of the URL that Rex Parker's blog is suspicious about. It might be the fact that it has .html followed by some parameters (id and title). I did a trick here so that I would not have to generate a new html page for each puzzle. There is a way around this but I need to postpone implementing it until the weekend. For now I have modified Upload to include the old version of the URL.

    This is a test using a BEQ puzzle.
