FIREBALL by Jeff Chen: Wow, didn't get it until I was writing my notes. Tough. @r.alph, the ACPT score time seemed off, since my timer read 55:55 when I was done cheating :-).
I came up with the idea for the puzzle this morning. It came together pretty easily. The top row was added after the rest of the puzzle was done so it isn't really a runt anymore.

Hit the Show Solvers button to see @BobK's and @bodgit1's results interleaved with mine.
@bodgit1 If you want to be referred to as bodgit1 in the interleaved comments, you can do the following.
1. Next time you start a puzzle locate the options link at the top of the window, click it, and replace "anonymous" with "bodgit1" and click okay. You only have to do this once.
@r.alph: Is there still some way to view your solution separately, too? Always like to see the words filling into the grid, and also see yer overall comments. Thanx.
Man, just scooted in, under the time cutoff. Thanx, @bodgit1. [I seem to keep wantin to type in "dogbit1". Apologies in advance, if I ever make this typo.]
"Justly Desserts" - Tasty. No cheats but I'm bringing up the rear time-wise as usual! http://puzzlecrowd.com:8080/CrowdSource/GetSolution?id=NTI3NTMxMzQxODE3NDUwOQ
@BobK If you ever have to hit Resume then a pause happened. This could happen if you went to another window in the browser or tabbed to another program and then returned to the puzzle.
@r.alph - I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. I had just started the puzzle when the phone rang (put in one or two answers). So I hit "pause" and turned my attention from the puzzle for 4 minutes and 40 seconds, according to my phone. Then I went back to the puzzle, hit "resume" and finished. Never left the page, went to another browser, or did anything on the computer. As always, I'm not complaining, just doing my part as a test solver!
Hitting the pause button will stop the puzzle clock (the one that is running while you solve the puzzle). The adjusted time should be whatever time is shown on the puzzle clock when the solution is determined to be corrected. I am not sure why your adjusted time is only 2 minutes from the actual time:
Time when puzzle correct: 8 min 29 sec Time when puzzle handed in: 8 min 32 sec Adjusted time for handing in: 6 min 34 sec
OK. We got ourselves an emergency, up there in Minnesota. @Teedmn darlin needs to get her runty nerve back. This here runtpuz is the proposed medicine. [Note: This can be a tricky balance. Want the runt to be well-behaved, yet just feisty enough to give one a runt-like feelin of accomplishment.]
Thanks, M&A, for the parsing of 15A. Apparently, my "Rhymes with Orange" link was not connected :-).
As to finding the balance of fairness/difficulty on clues, the charm of the Runt is its variability. One never knows what one will find when one hits the "Show Puzzle" button, and that's the draw, for me anyway.
@r.alph - My first wrong guess for 1 A was the same as your first guess, but I always try to scan for at least one confirming or flatly refuting cross, and let's just say there was something in my genes that stopped me from making that entry.
@Teedmn - Thanks for posting your results on the Saturday Stumper. It proved too hard for me but I used your comments to work through the areas I couldn't solve on my own.
@Teedmn: har. Next Runtpuz Daring Experiment has just about gotta have a title of either "Conversational Implicature" or "Hopelessness" (or combo), yes?
***slight "Stinkin Down Clues" spoiler, maybe*** What can M&A say? Real hard for him to use the word "nanoseconds" without also using "precious" or "valuable". Purely a reflex action. **************
M&A
p.s. Hey! Another first!! A possible Daring Experiment Spinoff runt: "We Need Stinkin Down Clues!"
Yo! Everybody did real great on the "Voodoo Power Ball", so we're probably good, now (for the moment). Do U nice folks like metas? Meta runt U liked, ever? (The meta question is stuffed into 18-Across, but ain't part of the 18-Across actual clue…)
"We Need Some Stinkin Down Clues!" - 7x7 daring experiment spinoff:
****** slight, barely registering spoiler alert on "We Need Some Stinkin Down Clues!" **********
@BobK: Fear not the meta. U can do this, dude. Take another hard look at the title, which is really trying to help U out. Pretty nice solve time, btw. U just missed the minute-line cutoff.
"We Need Some Stinkin' Down Clues" - I might have the meta, but I have no reason to run the comparison function. No point after seeing how successful everyone else was. I'm back to my tricks again?
The funnest thing about runt-meta is the guesses y'all have been proposin. Standin O. thUmbsUp. All primo proposals, but no one has nailed it Down, yet.
Perhaps that made its nasty way-pavin predecessor, "We Don't Need No Stinkin Down Clues!" runt worthwhile, in the long view … ? (M&A is always pretty desperate for approvals.)
The kind of meta that forces me to admit I never would have gotten it, but still doesn't make me feel like I should ask to get my money back (lot of good that would do me!)
re: "Trust But Verify", but with *****spoiler alert******
Shoot. Just thought of a way that I coulda dropped an extra hint, in those nasty 7-letter rim answers. Example: 1-Across: { Next, but interrupted?? [But verified by the long hidden "On the other hand …"] }
The new clue using an extra "but", right before "interrupted". This mighta been fairer. I know, I know -- Still bites, tho. *****************************************
We now return y'all to the sane world of normal crossword puzs. M&A will hold the "Conversational Implicature" runtpuz in a real strong cage for a long spell, until any current nip marks heal over.
M&A
p.s. @bodgit1: Nice solve, no if's, and's, but but's.
@r.alph: yep. I considered that, in a couple different ways: * circling stuff on the periphery. * circling a word in the center. Ultimately, I opted for the no-circles, biter version. Maybe this idea, ultimately, just had too many day-um semi-unchecked letters, no matter how many times the constructioneer reveals his "but" to the solver.
@M&A - Just wondering -- Since you post an inconspicuous "gruntz" marker at the end of your comments over at Rex's place on the appropriate days, could you not make that marker a hot link to the runt? No increase in conspicuity, but it might bring a few more people to the site. Seems to me it has been a while - Annabel was probably still in kindergarten - since you even explained what the "gruntz" signified.
I think my @Rex commenting career was in its infancy when M&A quit announcing them. I remember because that's why I finally sought this site out, having never seen a Runt in the wild. So late 2014, early 2015. It is rather hard to find and I knew what to look for.
May need to practice this on up, a might, tho. (OOOOOOh… or maybe @r.alph could also set up a "**gruntz** to GetRunt file" hotlink for m&e, when his neat program generates that other cool "Across Lite" link, in the Runt Upload app??)
I may be askin for the moon, here, tho … ? [not meant to be a but-reference]
re: "Your What Hurts?" O. M. G. Three under-3 solve times. And an under-2 solve time. I am so proud of U test solvers. (If it weren't for the fact that U work runt puzzles, The World would look upon U with tremendous admiration.)
@M&A UploadRunt has been modified to include a third line suitable for pasting into a Rex Parker post. To test it I paste in next and it should bring up the latest BEQ puzzle. **gruntz**
Wow! Thanx, @r.alph: Exactly what M&A can use -- hotlink that says **gruntz** but sends em to vastly superior BEQ puzs, so that they think they are gettin stupendous M&A ones! M&A fame is now assured! (har) Seriously -- you're fantastic!
@r.alph: Sounds like a compliment, to m&e. Was real impressed, how fast U figured out 3-D; got lots of faulty office equipment, at yer place of business?
I put out a comment at Rex Parker's quite a while back today, that contained a "hot" **gruntz**. If I did it right, all hell may break loose, soon. Or, if not soon, then whenever the @009-monitor-meister beams me up.
(Assuming every swingin Tom, Dick and Hairy is gonna click on a hotlink offered up by a weird-actin, anonymous dude that wears a mask … hmmmm … )
@bodgit1: 3:39 is lookin pretty good, on the "Serious" runt.
@BobK.: har. Well, so far the **gruntz** hotlink is packin em in like Jeb! supporters. Maybe if M&A pre-faced it with "Go ahead -- pull my finger, here:" or somesuch?
@r.alph: CPU. Great first guess. re:Runtpuz theme: Cuter than snot idea?! Didn't think so.
@M&A - Ouch! You really know how to hurt a guy! ;>)
But seriously, I was thinking how I had to get into runts slowly and with a lot of guidance, and (forgive me, r.alph) I thought maybe the page to which the **GRUNTZ** hotlink takes people might have to be re-written to give more step-by-step instructions on signing in, uploading solutions, copying the key to one's solution, etc, etc.
Can you guys tell when a runt has been accessed even if the solver doesn't do any kind of registration? I.e., can you tell if anyone new has clicked on the **GRUNTZ** link?
"You Can NOT Be Serious" - Well, a clean solve anyway.I got the Most Erasures award. @bodgit1, nice solve, and @Bob also, clean, fast and no erasures (@bodgit1's looked like a typo).
@r.alph the unknown: Looks good, and I bet I could manage getting the title in, each time. If U think it's a good idea, maybe also add info on how to get to this blog and the runtpuz.org archive, down at the bottom of the new **gruntz** screen? Just a thought.
"Give 'Er Some Gas" -- I did this one in a big rush Saturday morning, before taking off for Connecticut. I felt I had done so badly that I didn't want to post my results, although now that I have done so I see I wasn't much behind the other regulars, Also, I thought, when I saw the completed grid, that I understood it, but now that I have read M&A's remarks, I see that I missed an important point.
The good people of Westport never had anything to worry about from my attendance:
The good news for me is that for only the second time ever (the first time having been two years ago, my only other appearance at Westport) I actually won something at a Crossword Tournament: A certificate, signed by Will Shortz himself and in person, testifying that I had completed all the puzzles with a clean solve. The Dump-Cold-Water-On-My-Good-News factor: So many participants won that same certificate that the event organizers had to have Will S. talk an extra 20 minutes while they printed up more of them!
@r.alph: I just now posted my daily comment at Rex Parker's, using a **gruntz** link generated about the time I posted the "Give 'Er Some Gas" runt, on this runtpuz.blogspot.com site. Then I saw yer test comments, above.
Will fireworks ensue?
In any case, let me know, when I should test something new, too.
@M&A It probably will be okay. If you don't want to wait to find out you can paste the link in a post here.
I thought of a potential problem with the current Upload that I will fix tomorrow. If you want to use it before then avoid any non-letter characters in the title.
For your Super Bowl listening pleasure, a song by my band, Rockthrow, written and sung by the late, great Kevin Brixius. The ironic thing is Kevin always watched the Super Bowl, his cynicism towards the game notwithstanding:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LnDaGs0_N0
"Super Bow-L Blowout" - I turned this into a Biter, all on my own. Thanks, M&A.
So… It appears we may have an un-anticipated META in this runtpuz, that either no test solver spotted, or no one could stomach mentionin. har. Funny, cuz the META originally was intended as the main theme of the runt! @r.alph was startin to sniff it out, with his 16-A comment …
Super Bow-L Blowout http://puzzlecrowd.com:8080/CrowdSource/GetSolution?id=Mzc5Nzc1NDg2NDg2NDUxMg
I think I found the META.
@M&A UploadRunt is ready to go. It should be able to accept any title. If you don't enter a title, the title will be "Untitled". Should it be something else?
Ironic since so many @Rex Parker commenters complain about the foreign clues/answers. The article leaves me feeling ignorant compared to the past generations.
There's this joke that always gets a laugh from foreign students If you know three languages you're trilingual If you know two languages you're bilingual If you know one language you're ... American!
When I look at the source of the page I see <a href="javascript:void(0);" rel="nofollow">**gruntz**</a> This is surely not what you posted. Could you copy and paste what you pasted into Rex Parker here?
@r.alph: Kinda odd, cuz the hotlink worked just fine, when I posted it at 8:20pm on 6Feb. Only thing I changed in the html-stuff was "**gruntz** to **click here**. I then saved the original html into a text file, for use the next day; but it somehow rotted overnight to where it no longer worked? Just eyeballing the saved html, it appears to be ok (to the semi-trained eye of M&A).
Also, the new hotlink added tonight for Stumpy Stumper seemed to work ok. I will now attempt a test of using the text-file-saved version of its html, below…
@M&A My guess is that there is something about the form of the URL that Rex Parker's blog is suspicious about. It might be the fact that it has .html followed by some parameters (id and title). I did a trick here so that I would not have to generate a new html page for each puzzle. There is a way around this but I need to postpone implementing it until the weekend. For now I have modified Upload to include the old version of the URL.

@M&A - Just wondering -- Since you post an inconspicuous "gruntz" marker at the end of your comments over at Rex's place on the appropriate days, could you not make that marker a hot link to the runt? So… It appears we may have an un-anticipated META in this runtpuz, that either no test solver spotted, or no one could stomach mentionin. har. Funny, cuz the META originally was intended as the main theme of the runt!
@r.alph was startin to sniff it out, with his 16-A comment …
M et A
I see the meta now but I'll pass on mentioning it.

I think I found the META.
@M&A
UploadRunt is ready to go. It should be able to accept any title. If you don't enter a title, the title will be "Untitled". Should it be something else?
@r.alph: I really like the new intro screen setup. It is a masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteAlso, congrats on finding M et A's SBD themers.

Interesting article about the use of foreign words in the NYT:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/02/07/opinion/what-74-years-of-times-crosswords-say-about-the-words-we-use.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region®ion=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region
Ironic since so many @Rex Parker commenters complain about the foreign clues/answers. The article leaves me feeling ignorant compared to the past generations.
DeleteThere's this joke that always gets a laugh from foreign students

p.s.
@r.alph: The **gruntz** hotlink on my Rex Parker comment today doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe I did somethin wrong, or maybe it got disabled?

Thanks.
When I look at the source of the page I see

This is surely not what you posted. Could you copy and paste what you pasted into Rex Parker here?
@r.alph: Sure. I think it was this:

@r.alph: Doesn;t seem to work here, either. Therefore, probably something I did wrong?
DeleteThanx,

@r.alph: Kinda odd, cuz the hotlink worked just fine, when I posted it at 8:20pm on 6Feb. Only thing I changed in the html-stuff was "**gruntz** to **click here**.
DeleteI then saved the original html into a text file, for use the next day; but it somehow rotted overnight to where it no longer worked? Just eyeballing the saved html, it appears to be ok (to the semi-trained eye of M&A).
Also, the new hotlink added tonight for Stumpy Stumper seemed to work ok. I will now attempt a test of using the text-file-saved version of its html, below…

Comments coming thick and fast - seems this one is about Number 193 in this thread!
ReplyDelete@M&A
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that there is something about the form of the URL that Rex Parker's blog is suspicious about. It might be the fact that it has .html followed by some parameters (id and title). I did a trick here so that I would not have to generate a new html page for each puzzle. There is a way around this but I need to postpone implementing it until the weekend. For now I have modified Upload to include the old version of the URL.
This is a test using a BEQ puzzle.
